    The Year of Genre

Welcome to 2020, friends! We’re going to spend the year investigating genre, and we hope you’ll join us. If you’ve wanted to try your hand at writing fantasy, mystery, romance, a western, sci-fi, or children’s lit, this series is made for you. But wait—there’s more! We’re also going to have classes on historical fiction, superhero stories, magical realism, dystopian tales, and even fan fiction. And in October, we’re back at it with the Haunted Inkwell V, this time focused on (you guessed it!) writing horror. Head over to our Events page for all the details of date, time, and place. Get your pens and pencils ready for an exciting year…

Bluff & Vine Issue Two Party!

Last night we held a reception for Issue Two of Bluff & Vine (Keuka Lake’s one and only literary magazine!) at the Arc of Yates. Authors mingled with members of the public, who came out to support the local literary community. And we are thrilled to announce that at last night’s event, Keuka Writes donated $1,000 in proceeds to our artistic partners at SkylArc Studio at the Arc. We couldn’t build Bluff & Vine without them! Check out pictures of the event here.

Hard to believe, but 2018 is on the way out! In this year’s final episode of PYPL’s Cardigans and Conversations, local librarians Sarah Creveling and Alex Andrasik talk about upcoming events, share a local news item, let us know what they’re reading, and say goodbye to a pop-culture icon. The Haunted Inkwell 3

On Saturday, October 27th, the third annual Haunted Inkwell writing event took place at the Penn Yan Public Library. This year, we started by asking participants to tell us what they fear. We came up with a pretty impressive list: Next, we each picked a fear from the board and spent 5-7 minutes writing about it. We then shared our stories out loud, challenging our fellow writers to guess our fear(s). Check out a story from each of our Haunted Inkwell writers below… if you dare!   Close Encounter by Sally L. White I’ve always enjoyed cemeteries—even when I was young. I’d go for the poetry. But, really, only in…

    Frankenstein at 200

In 1818, Mary Shelley published Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. What would nineteen-year-old Mary think if she knew that, two hundred years later, we’re still reading, discussing, and celebrating her novel? On October 22, the Penn Yan Public Library hosted a talk called Frankenstein at 200. Audience members watched a TEDEd refresher on the story, and then were treated to lively discussion about the book by Keuka College chemistry professor Andy Robak and local writer Bethany Snyder. Hosted by Adult Services Librarian Alex Andrasik, Frankenstein at 200 was captured on audio for the first episode of the new podcast, PYPL’s Cardigans and Conversation. http://keukawrites.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Frankenstein-200.mp3Podcast: Play in new window | Download
